Although their primary professions are
psychiatry and elementary school education, respectively, Greg and Mary Beth Dimijian have
spent many months each year photographing wildlife in Africa, the new World tropics,
Antarctica, and elsewhere. Their photographic studies emphasize animal behavior and
habitat ecology. Greg also teaches a course in Behavioral Ecology at the University of
Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas.
AnimalWatch: Behavior, Biology, and Beauty, by Greg and Mary Beth Dimijian (Harry N.
Abrams, 1996) is a beautiful and engagingly written large-format book of the
Dimijians most striking photographs, accompanied by essays describing the behavior
and biology behind the images. Greg and Mary Beth are close friends of the famed
naturalist Jane Goodall, who wrote a moving Forward to the book. Readers will discover a
world of instructive images of animal behavior and dramatic natural habitats, from rain
forests to the African savanna and the frigid continent at the bottom of the world.
The Dimijians are available for making slide presentations, the fee for which is based on
length of presentation and structure of the teaching session. Many images from the
authors book are included. The presentations provide an introduction to tropical
biodiversity, rain forest ecology, the Serengeti migration in East Africa, the oasis of
the Okavango Delta of southern Africa, Antarctic ecology, and principles of behavioral
ecology. Examples are shown of social behavior, antipredator defenses, mimicry, crypsis,
parasitism, play, natural and sexual selection, mating strategies, and adaptation to
environmental extremes. Discussion of photographic techniques is included if desired.
